RECENT PROJECTS

CAFÉ DISPLAY Phoenix 2
11 MAY - 6 JULY 2009 - FREE, JUST DROP IN
In November 2008 Year 12 (Sixth Form) students from Oxford School worked with artist Jon Lockhart. Inspired by the Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller exhibition at Modern Art Oxford, the students used found objects from the school’s history to create an installation, transforming a classroom into a fascinating imaginary scene from the past. Their show in Modern Art Oxford's Café reflects on the images and artefacts created or uncovered during the workshop.

Windale Community Primary School
Pupils at Windale Community Primary School in Oxford have been taking inspiration from their natural surroundings in a series of workshops organised by Modern Art Oxford. As part of the school’s Outdoor Learning strand, local artist Miranda Creswell has been helping Year 4 pupils recreate small-scale scenic models of their environs. The sculptural objects range in subject from pupils’ homes and school, to the Oxfordshire countryside.

Raphaël Zarka Exhibition Guide
As part of our Encounters series, BTEC students from Oxford School interviewed artist Raphaël Zarka. The interview was included in the Exhibition Guide. Download the Exhibition Guide here.

Janet Cardiff at Rose Hill Primary School
Year 4 pupils from Rose Hill Primary School worked with artist Janet Cardiff to produce a binaural recording of a story, written by Cardiff, about a dog called Sparky. By recording binaurally, where a microphone is placed in each ear and the sound is recorded as you hear it, the recording should have a three dimensional and realistic quality.

The children developed sound effects such as leaves and bird song creating noises for a layered soundscape of the forest where the story is set. Playing with the idea of binaural recording the children moved through the space and around the ‘dummy head’ so that the sounds could be heard three dimensionally. The children continued to develop the layers of recording by voicing the characters that appear in the story such as owls, foxes, and mice, with Cardiff binding the story together as narrator.

This project was made possible through the kind support of Jill and John Ritblat.
