LOCAL STORIES

Places people and communities are often the starting point for the most powerful contemporary art. From Mexico City to Mumbai, from Tirana to Oxford the artists in Local Stories represent, document, or interpret fragments of real experience. They reassert the importance of the local and the everyday. Richly diverse stories are created or await our imaginative discovery.
Including painting, photography, video and installation, the works in Local Stories are engaging and inspirational. Resisting uniformity, the personal, social and political cohere in art that is at once responsive and open to the changing times.
Among the works in the Local Stories presented int he UK for the first time are Tedi by Gillian Wearing (born 1963, lives in London) and the video/ shadow-play installation Gamepieces by Nalini Malani (born 1946, lives in Mumbai), which will occupy the Upper Gallery.
