The Oxford Open & Helen Ganly

12 January to 17 February - FREE ADMISSION

The Oxford Open celebrates the talent of artists who live or work in or near the city. Including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and video, the Open is a unique opportunity to view the work of over 500 artists.

The Open follows the success of The Oxford Show in 2004. This time there is no selection panel. Artists have been invited to submit work in any media as long as it can be presented within one cubic metre of wall or floor.

With an astonishing array of art on view, the Open encourages visitors to think about which works in the exhibition they like most and why. A vibrant events programme, led by artists and curators, provides a forum for discussion and debate about how we look at and think about art.

A number of special guests including musician Alex James and artist Janette Parris have been invited to select their favourite works. Join us on four Tuesday evenings when the selectors will be discussing their choices.

Submissions were invited from anyone over the age of 18, living or working in or near Oxford.

HELEN GANLY: Journey into Light

12 January to 17 February - FREE ADMISSION

Lower Gallery

Helen Ganly makes art that reflects her interest in the fragility and instability of the world. She works across a range of media, from painting and drawing to printmaking and installation.

For her exhibition, Ganly presents a film documenting a performance by her in Poland in 2004, a selection of small sculptures and notebooks. Notebooks are an important component of her practice, as they serve as both diary and sketchbook.

Helen Ganly was born in Cookham, Berkshire in 1940. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London from 1958 to 1962. Ganly taught for ten years at The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art and in the Education Department of Oxford Brookes University. In 2000 she was given a Year of the Artist award to be the first Artist-in-Residence at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The artist has exhibited widely in the UK and Europe. She has lived and worked in Oxford since 1966.

Curated by Allia Ali, the exhibition forms part of our season devoted to the visual arts in Oxford.

The Oxford Season was supported by agnes b. U.K., Barclays Commercial Bank, Oddbins and The Oxford Times.
