RECALL
27 MARCH TO 2 MAY 2004 - FREE ADMISSION
PHIL COLLINS, JEREMY DELLER, JASMILA ZBANIC
RECALL brings together recent work in film and video. Drawing on documentary genres, among others, Phil Collins, Jeremy Deller and Jasmila Zbanic question the way history is constructed by allowing alternative stories to be told. Intensely engaging, their works explore the contested nature of how we remember.
Phil Collins makes work at sites of political conflict and civil discord, but his interest is not recording history as it unfolds. His films and photographs are instead startingly honest documents that allow a personal intimacy normally edited out.
Jeremy Deller weaves together events from the past with fallout from the present to create a form of contemporary history painting. Deller uses the documentary medium as a flexible structure within which different ideas and viewpoints continually shift.
Jasmila Zbanic began making films during the Bosnian War (1992-1995). Her films are a mosaic of different people's personal accounts that she pieces together in such a way as to offer us new sets of images to recall.
Curated by Miria Swain, Modern Art Oxford, Assistant Curator.
The exhibition is supported by Bang & Olufsen, Summertown, Oxford
