Encounters: Victor Alimpiev

15 June to 31 August - FREE ADMISSION

Victor Alimpiev’s films and videos address the subtleties of human expression. With their origins in painting, and incorporating elements of music, dance and theatre, Alimpiev’s elegantly staged works offer an absorbing reflection on the relationship between individuals and the collective.

Alimpiev’s exhibition at Modern Art Oxford will include his well-known work Summer Lightnings from 2004, an enigmatic evocation of a peculiar natural phenomenon, involving a group of young school children. As a counterpart, the new work Whose is this exhalation?, 2008, embodies Alimpiev’s fascination for the senses, and their elucidation through actors.

The exhibition is the fifth in our Encounters series and Alimpiev’s first exhibition in the UK. Born in 1973, the artist lives and works in Moscow.

Encounters: Victor Alimpiev is supported by the David Elliott Fund.

Encounters is a programme of exhibitions in the Lower Gallery, displays at our partner schools and in the community, and special projects and events.
