PRESS RELEASE

April 2005

OXFORD 2015

9 June to 19 June 2005

Oxford 2015 involves ten days of exhibitions, talks, workshops, and events, held at Modern Art Oxford, exploring what Oxford could be like ten years from now. This is the first time an arts programme has tackled such an ambitious question in Oxford.

At a key moment of actual and potential change in the city’s development, Oxford 2015 offers a space for discussion and debate. It provides an opportunity to showcase the imaginative and creative ideas of the city’s artists and architects, school pupils and community groups, about the changing landscape of Oxford, and where its future lies.

Highlights of the programme include:

- A display of the most imaginative ideas submitted by members of the public for the future of their city.

- The results of a schools’ art competition, judged by the award-winning author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon.

- A chance for the public to see the developers’ real plans for the city brought together in the same place for the first time.

Oxford 2015 starts with a one-day international conference held at Oxford Brookes University, on the subject of public spaces. At Modern Art Oxford, throughout the ten-day programme, keynote speakers that include local councillors will go head to head in a series of lunchtime and evening talks. Discussion topics will include ’Can Oxford be a sustainable city?’ and ’What are the ingredients of European cities of culture?’

Oxford 2015 is part of Modern Art Oxford’s 40th anniversary celebrations, and forms a highlight of the Evolving City programme. Evolving City is a year-long programme co-ordinated by Oxford Inspires, that explores the city’s vibrant cultural scene through a series of performances, festivals and events. Partners in the Oxford 2015 project include Artpoint, Fusion, Oxford Visual Arts Development Agency, Oxford Brookes University, Oxford City Council and The Oxford Times.

Oxford 2015 is supported by the Westgate Partnership.
