ARRIVALS>LATVIA Alnis Stakle
November 2005
ARRIVALS>LATVIA Alnis Stakle – Lower Gallery
24 January to 4 March 2006
Modern Art Oxford presents the first UK exhibition of work by Latvian artist Alnis Stakle. The artist will be in residence at Modern Art Oxford in November 2005.
The work of Alnis Stakle is an intriguing blend of different approaches to photography. Working in black and white and colour film, Stakle adopts the language of documentary reportage to record his surrounding environment and daily life. The resulting work both expands the possibility of photographic self-portraiture and reveals the extraordinary in the everyday. Stakle has observed of his work that it is not he who chooses his subject matter, but the subject matter that chooses him.
Alnis Stakle was born in 1975 in Livani. He graduated with a Masters in Environmental Education from Daugavpils University in 2002 and is currently undertaking doctoral studies in art education while lecturing in photography at Daugavpils University. He has exhibited widely both in Latvia and throughout Europe and his work was recently published in the Dutch magazine EYEMAZING.
During his residency in Oxford, Stakle will be in conversation about his work with Lithuanian artist Zilvinas Landzbergas and artist Rona Lee on Wednesday 30 November from 6.30 to 8.30pm. The event is organised in association with OVADA (Oxford Visual Arts Development Agency) as part of arc+, a new advisory service for artists and artists’ groups in the South East.
