Places, people and communities are often the starting point for the most powerful contemporary art. From Mexico City to Mumbai, from Tirana to Oxford the artists in Local Stories represent, document, or interpret fragments of real experience. They reassert the importance of the local and the everyday. Richly diverse stories are created or await our imaginative discovery.
Including painting, photography, video and installation, the works in Local Stories are engaging and inspirational. Resisting uniformity, the personal, social and political cohere in art that is at once responsive and open to the changing times.
Among the works in Local Stories presented in the UK for the first time are Tedi by Gillian Wearing (born 1963, lives in London) and the video/ shadow-play installation Gamepieces by Nalini Malani (born 1946, lives in Mumbai). Gamepieces will occupy the whole of the Upper Gallery – Modern Art Oxford’s largest exhibiting space, the site of other memorable installations in recent years by, among others, Jim Lambie, Fiona Tan and Jake & Dinos Chapman.
Local Stories also includes: Happiness, a film by Daniel Guzman (born 1964, lives in Mexico City); Asylum Seekers, photographs by Rory Carnegie (born 1962, lives in Oxford); The Port Glasgow Book Project by Mark Neville (born 1969, lives in Glasgow) and a new installation of paintings by Laura Lancaster (born 1979, lives in Newcastle).
The work of the Czech artist Katerina Seda (born 1979, lives and works in Brno) in the Lower Gallery is both part of Local Stories and the latest contribution to Modern Art Oxford’s ARRIVALS> series of exhibitions. It forms part of ARRIVALS>NEW ART FROM THE EU, a series of exhibitions over two years at Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary, Margate introducing the work of artists from the expanded European Union.
Local Stories is a Modern Art Oxford exhibition curated by Andrew Nairne, assisted by Luisa Summers. The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with an introduction by Andrew Nairne.
