HELEN GANLY: JOURNEY INTO LIGHT

12 JANUARY TO 17 FEBRUARY 2008

As part of a season of exhibitions devoted to the visual arts in Oxford, Modern Art Oxford presents a solo exhibition of work by Oxford artist Helen Ganly.

Helen Ganly makes art that reflects her interest in the fragility and instability of the world. She works across a range of media, from painting and drawing to printmaking and installation. For her exhibition at Modern Art Oxford, Ganly presents a film documenting her performance in Poland in 2004, a selection of small sculptures including intricate hand cut tracing paper silhouettes of cityscapes, and notebooks. Notebooks are an important component of her practice, as they serve as both diary and sketchbook.

Suzanne Cotter, Acting Director of Modern Art Oxford, said,
‘We are delighted to be presenting Helen’s first solo exhibition at Modern Art Oxford. The artist has a long association with the Gallery and is a well known figure in Oxford’s artistic community. The exhibition is a timely tribute to her work.’

Artist Helen Ganly said,
‘The need to draw, paint, write and make objects as a way of making sense of the world has been present since childhood and these components are present in my current work.’

Ganly is perhaps best known for her edible sculpture ‘The Radcliffe Camera as a Celebration Cake’ created with Heather Peers in 2006. Helen Ganly was born in Cookham, Berkshire in 1940. She studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London from 1958 to 1962. Ganly taught for ten years at The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art and in the Education Department of Oxford Brookes University. In 2000 she was given a Year of the Artist award to be the first Artist-in-Residence at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The artist has exhibited widely in the UK and Europe. She has lived and worked in Oxford since 1966.

Exhibition Curated by Allia Ali, Exhibition Organiser at Modern Art Oxford.
