BOX LADDER

23 February to 2 March 2008

A week-long event staged by students from The Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, University of Oxford.

As part of the programme celebrating art in Oxford, students from all three years of The Ruskin School of Fine Art and Drawing will engage in an act of gallery piracy as they take over Modern Art Oxford. Entitled BOX LADDER, the week-long event plays with the idea of exchange. The title refers to “the continual flux of a tournament or game, a ceaseless reshuffling of energies and excitements through which an atmosphere of play and provocation is established”.

Interested in re-addressing the function and geography of the gallery space, BOX LADDER will provide the trajectory from which numerous events will spring. A platform for film screenings, speakers, music, and publications, Modern Art Oxford will be reworked into a site that straddles the definitions of library, cinema, concert hall and gallery.

“After the success of their weekend exhibition at the Gallery in 2004, we’re delighted to welcome back students from the Ruskin. Their response to our invitation in the form of an exhibition, forum and platform for events reflects their energy and intelligence as young artists of the future.” Suzanne Cotter, Acting Director and Senior Curator of Modern Art Oxford.
