Modern Art Oxford are hosting several events as part of The Culture of Rowing & Swimming, a special programme of events organised by Oxford Brookes University, and funded by the Creative Campus Initiative, as part of the celebrations leading up to the 2012 London Olympics.

Last week internationally acclaimed Lithuanian artists Gediminas and Nomeda Urbonas kicked off the programme by giving a talk at Modern Art Oxford about their practice and recent work. Gediminas and Nomeda are in Oxford as artists in residence for The Culture of Rowing and Swimming programme.

The talk covered topics including rowing and swimming in political philosophy and issues of competitive elites.

Coming up - The Culture of Rowing & Swimming Film Programme on Thursday 15 July: a screening of artists’ films related to rowing and swimming. This programme includes work by Andrew Kotting, Antti Laitinen, Miranda Whall, Jayne Parker, Jem Cohen, Tony Hill, Helen Edwards and Cesare Pietroiusti.

Get involved - The Outdoor Swimming Society are organising a Wild Swim Day on Saturday 17 July. Swimmers are invited to join Kate Rew, author of Wild Swim and founder of the Outdoor Swimming Society, for a social swim. This short early morning swim will focus on the sounds of nature and the meditative quality of swimming in open water. Wetsuits optional. After the swim, drop into the gallery to see documentary films of previous Wild Swims and the feature films Million Dollar Mermaid (Esther Williams) and The Swimmer (Burt Lancaster).
