De/Install
03.02.2011 : Kayleigh Hellin
NEW EXHIBITION opening Tuesday 22 - Saturday 26 February
Oxford-based collective Sputnik presents De/Install, a group exhibition of works by finalists at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art.
The term ‘de/install’ describes the hidden activities of art-institutions between their shows. For the duration of this exhibition, a live de-installation of Thomas Houseago’s sculptures in our upper galleries will become the focus of works in a variety of media.
In an art world conditioned by tight schedules and health and safety measures, galleries are inclined to close for their de/install periods, relegating this activity to a non-art status. Video, performance, installation and sculpture uncover the theatrical, humorous and artistic judgments made by technicians, curators, gallery staff, and even artists in these transitional periods. Talks and other events accompany the exhibition.
