Déjà Vu in Rose Hill

16.03.2010 : Sara Dewsbery

Artist Maria Pask has been filming on location in Rose Hill, a housing estate in Oxford.

Inspired by 'Rose Hill Roundabout', a community newsletter produced in Rose Hill from the 1950s to the 1960s, Déjà vu stars local people alongside professional actors. The new film commission will be the first presentation in Modern Art Oxford's newly configured ground-floor gallery, when the building re-opens on 17 April 2010.

The film presents a series of mini-dramas, recalling past community events described in archived issues of 'Roundabout'. Pask recreated a tiddlywinks contest, a tug of war and a tea dance. Fun to film, these events also provide an insight into issues prevalent at the time, such as continuity of local life, community and togetherness. Norman Brown, editor of 'Roundabout', promoted the development of a community engaged in political and social discussion whilst recognising the value and importance of local life.
