Discover new talents with LIVE FRIDAY...

Around 100 people crammed into The Yard last Friday evening for the launch of LIVE FRIDAY, a series of events showcasing intriguing and eclectic approaches to performance, music and spoken word.

Kicking off the evening was Liverpool-based poet Nathan Jones, who presented a 40 minute piece that drew heavily from his recent experiences of first-time fatherhood.  Devised as the culmination of his year long residency at The Bluecoat in Liverpool, the piece incorporated pre-recoded music and visuals which Nathan modulated live, echoing the rhythm and pacing of his delivery.

Next up was sound artist Stephen Cornford, tutor in Fine Art at Oxford Brookes. Stephen presented us with a kinetic sculpture that used eight tape recorders combined together to make an 'instrument' for looping. In a departure for Stephen he also added live vocals into the mix.

The headline act was Hannah Peel, who took time out of her busy summer of festival appearances to come to Oxford. Switching between instruments, including her distinctive music box with hand punched paper scrolls, Hannah wowed the audience with her incredible voice and witty yet poignant reworkings of traditional Irish song and 80s synth-pop classics.  She also performed a number of her own compositions, including a  debut of a new song that may well appear on her upcoming release on Static Caravan records. LIVE FRIDAY ended with an encore and some singing along to delicate version of the New Order classic Blue Monday.
