Tango Schumann a sell-out at Modern Art Oxford
Modern Art Oxford Director Michael Stanley invited poet and performance artist Anthony Howell to stage Tango Schumann in the upper galleries at Modern Art Oxford.
A former dancer with the Royal Ballet, Anthony Howell’s performance art has been seen at Tate, the Hayward Gallery and at the Sydney Biennale. Together with dance partner Lindi Köpke, Howell is committed to finding ways to refresh visual performance and dance. In Tango Schumann, all reference to Latin American origins is stripped from the dance by interpreting works by Robert Schumann and other classical composers.
“Howell’s work is successful not only in the technical delivery and profound emotional impact and intensity of the work, but in the significant widespread appeal that his practice brings" Michael Stanley, Director, Modern Art Oxford.
The performance at Modern Art Oxford was preceded by two short films, contextualising and addressing some of the prominent concerns of Howell’s practice.
Anthony also led a series of Tango masterclasses at the Gallery on Sunday 14 March, including a workshop for people with Parkinson’s Disease. Research has shown that Tango can help to improve mobility and balance for people with Parkinson's Disease.
