Meetings with Remarkable Men

21.07.2011 at 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Modern Art Oxford

Dir. Peter Brook, UK, 1979, 108 mins (Cert. PG)

Based on his original autobiography, Meetings with Remarkable Men tells the story of spiritual leader G.I. Gurdjieff’s extraordinary quest for enlightenment. Set amidst the dramatic vistas of Central Asia, the film recounts meetings with Hindu fakirs, Buddhist monks, whirling dervishes and innumerous gurus. British film and theatre director Peter Brook gives us a fascinating portrait of the enigmatic leader and a rare glimpse of Gurdjieff’s dances and movements.

Selected by exhibiting artist Haegue Yang.

According to the film's credits, the sacred dances were brought to the film by Jeanne de Salzmann, the late Gurdjieff's 80-year-old trusted disciple and former aide:

'These brief sequences are exquisite, filled with... ecstasy and perfect discipline.' The New York Times.
