Out of the Present
06.01.2012 at 7:00 PM – 8:40 PM

Re-scheduled from 18 November. Organised as part of the Kerry Tribe exhibition.
Dir. Andrei Ujica, Germany, 1999, 96 mins
Out of the Present is the documentary that inspired much of Kerry Tribe’s film The Last Soviet. In May 1991 Sergei Krikalev blasted off towards the Mir space station, equipped with a 35mm camera to record his time in space. Originally due to return after six months, Krikalev was forced to remain in space an additional four months when the seismic events of August 1991 transformed the political landscape back on Earth.
Designed by Andrei Ujica and Vadim Yusov, DP on Tarkovsky’s Solaris, with shots actually filmed by the Russian cosmonauts, Out of the Present is an evocative and affecting portrait of life on an orbital space station, whose rich allusions to cinema’s great space fictions contrast with footage of riots in Moscow below, as the Soviet Union crumbles.
