Reading Room
14.07.2011 — 25.08.2011

Using the exhibitions at Modern Art Oxford as inspiration, Reading Room draws on philosophy, literature and art criticism to encourage lively debate and reflections on arts practice. Open to everyone, this summer's Reading Room uses texts to expand on themes relating to Haegue Yang's practice.
The first session on 14 July considers diaspora and identity via two texts; The House of the Frankfurt Mapmaker and The Changeling from Tokyo Cancelled by Rana Dasgupta (2006) and the Introduction to On Not Speaking Chinese by Ien Ang (2001). Taking a group of thirteen stranded passengers at Tokyo airport as its premise, Tokyo Cancelled reinvents the storytelling tradition. Blurring the boundaries between myth and reality, Tokyo Cancelled explores identity and morality in the context of a globalised world. In On Not Speaking Chinese, an intimate academic text, Ang grapples with her own identity as Indonesian-born, Dutch-educated Chinese.
The second session on 25 August considers the domestic realm and our experience of intimate places through Gaston Bachelard's philosophical book The Poetics of Space (1958). In it, Bachelard explores the home and takes us on a journey, from cellar to attic, to show how our perceptions of home shape our thoughts, memories and dreams.
There are a maximum of 12 places per session, which will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Refreshments will be provided.
Please collect texts from Modern Art Oxford's front desk in advance, to give you an opportunity to read them before the sessions.
Should any readers wish to purchase the whole texts, they can be ordered from Waterstones or purchased online at Amazon. The text for the second session, The Poetics of Space, can be purchased from Modern Art Oxford's Shop or from Waterstones.
