The Oxford Show

21.02.2004 — 21.03.2004

Modern Art Oxford

The contemporary visual arts scene in Oxford has never been more lively or diverse. This exhibition showcases the work of twenty-seven artists who live and work in or near Oxford.  It is the first open submission exhibition at Modern Art Oxford in over twenty years.

Painting, photography, video, sculpture and installation are shown side by side in an exhibition incorporating new and existing pieces.  The work presented ranges from landscapes and cityscapes of Oxford and beyond, to portraits, still life and abstract painting. There is no single theme, although connections between works do emerge, including explorations of the domestic and the dysfunctional, social and political responsibility and an interrogation of internal and external space both real and imagined.

Exhibiting artists: Adrian Arbib, Diana Bell, Alison Lilley Berrett, Rory Carnegie, Miranda Creswell, Ted Dewan, Ibrahim El-Salahi, Karen Forsyth, Helen Ganly, Steven Hicks, Margaret Hodges, Emi Hojo, Katy Howkins, Martin Koralczyk, Martha Lewis, Adam J. Maynard, Emily Porter-Salmon, Barry Reeves, Abigail Reynolds, Paul Richards, Michael Stokes, Roma Tearne, Mark Thompson, David Tolley, Sally Jane Webster, Joseph Winckelman, Sarah Wyatt.

Artists in The Oxford Show range from an undergraduate student reading English at St. Hilda's College, Oxford to an internationally acclaimed Sudanese artist.

The Oxford Show was selected by Andrew Nairne, Director, Modern Art Oxford and Helen Peacocke, Arts Correspondent, The Oxford Times. Over 300 artists submitted work for the exhibition.  Much of the work in The Oxford Show is for sale.  There will also be a fully illustrated publication available. Price £4.95.

The Oxford Show forms part of a season celebrating visual arts in and around Oxford including two events with the Oxford art schools, Brookes Contemporary, (5-8 February) and The Ruskin's Atomic Art Bomb, (12-15 February) at Modern Art Oxford.
