Welcome to the Breathworks online exhibition.

Breathworks is a digital project exploring everyone’s unique experiences of breathing. Throughout the month of August 2020, we invite you to contribute your own ‘breathwork’ to this project! Selected contributions will be shared across Modern Art Oxford’s website and Instagram. Click here to find out more and take part.

Our breath remains insistent
>
Even as we cover our faces our breath becomes more insistent. Our breath is filtered and distorted, made new, made louder, made more present. We may try to close out the world, to seek sanctuary or isolation. Yet our breath forbids us to forget, to relax, to escape. It insists we remain connected, remain aware. It frightens, it engages.

My wife died of lung cancer. Her breathing became more and more laboured towards the end. It seemed like every breath was painful; a harsh, rasping fight for air. Probably she couldn’t feel anything by that stage; that’s what the doctors said, anyway. It was certainly painful for me to hear, though. I sat with her for days, thinking each breath might be the last one. I vividly remember her last few choking, coughing breaths, stopping then suddenly starting again with a jolt, not wanting to give up on life, just one more breath, then another...

breathing exercise
>
‘“How wonderful the air smells!” cried Piccolo, taking very deep sniffs of air. The air was so cold and fresh that it tickled his nose and made him splutter, and then laugh!’ [Chapter One, Prince Piccolo sets off in search of Happiness, Seven Roads to Happiness, Desmond Marwood, 1969]
>
At dance classes as a child every lesson began with breathing and clapping exercises. Learning to breathe and to mark rhythm are fundamental to dance. This basic training at a young age combined with approaches to painting discovered in later life, including Abstract Expressionism as the work of Jackson Pollock and others is described and Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, coalesced in a small body of work, ‘breathing exercise’, 2013. Each stroke of the painting records a single exhaled breath. The stroke began when a brush, in this case a Chinese ink brush, was dipped into a pot of thinned watercolour paint whilst drawing in a single breath. The brush was then laid at the top of the paper and the wrist drawn down the paper as the breath was exhaled. Despite the slow and regular discipline of the approach, in, out, in, out, the painted strokes themselves clearly show that holding and releasing a breath is far from regular and mechanical.

Barley⠀
>⠀
“In contrast to the apparently unlimited, global character of the technologically mediated world, the sensuous world – the world of our direct unmediated interactions is always local. The sensuous world is the ground on which we walk, the air we breathe.” (David Abram, 2012, The Spell of the Sensuous)
>
As part of the experience of lockdown I have been walking across my local area, finding new pathways across fields and meadows. As I walked on a single track between two fields, I observed the movement of the barley to my left. It’s gentle undulating movement was like watching nature’s breath around me.

23040 Breaths - Only a Day (first 30 of the series)⠀
>⠀
Each individual piece in this series is breathed within a minute and tilted with the first reaction to the breath that I either thought or felt. The breath prints are as such a ritualistic trace of my being. When finished the work will consist of 23040 breaths, the average amount of breaths taken in one day. Currently there are 1189 diptychs so I have a long way to go! The recording is of a poem I wrote called 'Breathing With You' which accompanies the image as a reminder of our inevitable death and life continued through another's breath.⠀

spiro : spiritum⠀
breathe : breath⠀
inhale : exhale
>
I make a whistling sound, as I exhale, it drops like a sounding line into the air surrounding me, a drawing of negative space, marking new territories. At the start of the sound are my lips. They create a fragile threshold between within and without. But the sound, the breath, the spiro, traces backwards inside as it travels beyond. Through sinews to the small, smaller, smallest circles, curves and arches deep within the chamber of my ribcage. Where miracles occur and life is made. Transferred. And sometimes lost. From this place, my breath echoes outwards like ripples under the surface of my skin. At times it is percussive, broken, sonorous, black.
>
Once I could not breathe. Muffled. Stifled. Too many tears. But that time has passed. Somewhere in the archive of my body the memory of this time is buried. But now I try to allow my breath to unfold.

Becoming Wheat
>
This offering is part of the daily Photosynthesis-Respiration collaborative performances between me and the Emmer wheat I’ve been growing in my garden this spring/summer. It’s an entangled process whereby we exchange and transform carbon dioxide and oxygen. I have been kneeling over the wheat patch. Taking deep breaths. Counting to around 30. Recording the performances simply by video on my phone, I’ve then posted them daily on Instagram. I swear that the wheat is growing taller and stronger, due to the increase in CO2 from my breath. My deep inhalations and exhalations pull me into the present moment, and have gone some way to ease my anxiety during the current Covid-19 pandemic. The practice of expanding my lungs in this way reinforces the knowledge that I have that day, not contracted the coronavirus.

Breathing: a bodily process, a political statement, a meditation, a sigh of relief, a song, a drawing. How would you capture your breath right now?
.
Breathworks at Modern Art Oxford invites you to reconnect with your breath, and with fellow breathers online. For this image, volunteer Maria simply ‘drew’ the lines of her breath by blowing ink across a page. Sign up to the mailing list for more inspiration to create your own ‘breathwork’ in the project this August (link in our bio). #Breathworks #ModernArtOxford #ComingSoon @lucyartyoga
