City as Studio
City as Studio is Modern Art Oxford’s artist led project for young people. Young people aged 16-19 are invited to experiment and work collaboratively with other young artists to develop their creative practice and co-create professional quality artwork.
City as Studio Thursday Sessions
Our free Thursday evening City as Studio sessions are open to anyone aged 16-19, and are a fantastic opportunity to meet young people in the city, work with professional artists, and develop your creativity.
The next series will run from 20 April – 29 June 2023, every Thursday at the gallery from 4-6pm.
City as Studio Residencies
Keep an eye out for our City as Studio holiday residencies for ages 16-19 throughout the year. Young people are invited to meet and collaborate with others in the city, and get creative with guest professional artists.
Activities include collaborative art-making and getting insights into careers in the arts from the Modern Art Oxford team. Past guest artists include Oreet Ashery, Miriam Austin and Sian Gourlay.

Change, What is that Anyway?
In October 2022, artists Oreet Ashery, Miriam Austin and Sian Gourlay led a free five day art residency at the gallery. Alongside our exhibition with Marina Abramović, Gates and Portals, the group explored movement, gesture and performance.
The artworks they produced during the residency formed part of Change, What is that Anyway? an exhibition of work by Modern Art Oxford’s young artists from 3 December 2022 – 19 March 2023.

In response to the extended periods of lockdown in 2021, we ran a series of online residencies for ages 16-19.
Participants worked with artist Kate Mahony to learn DIY film-making and music editing skills, producing a series of film works from their homes. Their films explored themes of isolation, connection, and creativity as a force for social action.
