Experiment Experi\u00eancia begins with the early experiments of the Brazilian avant-garde led by Lygia Clark, H\u00e9lio Oiticica, Mira Schendel and Sergio Camargo. In the late 1950s, these and other artists began to challenge the expressive constraints of the picture plane, laying the foundations for successive generations of experimental approaches to making art. In 1959, the Manifesto Neoconcreto was published by the poet Ferreira Gullar in Rio de Janeiro to coincide with the Exposi\u00e7\u00e3o de Arte Neoconcreta. The Neo-Concrete group, which included Lygia Clark, H\u00e9lio Oiticica and Lygia Pape, criticised the excessive rationality and exclusion of emotion from Concrete art and urged that the visual arts, poetry and prose should combine intellectual and sensory experience.<\/p>\n
