To celebrate, here are a few facts you may not have known about the artist himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976) was a Belgian poet, filmmaker, and artist, who often created work with a witty approach. In the pieces presented at Modern Art Oxford in 1975, Broodthaers worked primarily with collage and found objects &#8211; always incorporating written texts, a legacy of his life as a poet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>KALEIDOSCOPE&nbsp;<em>The Vanished Reality<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;in 2016 presented Broodthaers&#8217; work almost exactly as it was displayed at the gallery four decades ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernartoxford.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Broodthaers2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.modernartoxford.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Broodthaers2-204x300.jpg\" alt=\"Broodthaers2\" class=\"wp-image-15725 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 204px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 204\/300;\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. <\/strong>In 1975, Modern Art Oxford hosted Broodthaers\u2019 <strong>first ever<\/strong> UK exhibition, titled&nbsp;<em>Le Privil\u00e9ge De L\u2019Art,&nbsp;<\/em>which took place from 26 April \u2013 1 June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> From the age of 16, Broodthaers spent 20 years as a <strong>struggling poet<\/strong>&nbsp;until the early 1960s when he decided to become an artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> The first art object Broodthaers created in 1963 was made by embedding 50 unsold copies of his <strong>book of poems<\/strong>,&nbsp;<em>Pense-B\u00eate<\/em>&nbsp;in plaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernartoxford.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Broodthaers1.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.modernartoxford.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Broodthaers1-300x181.jpeg\" alt=\"Broodthaers1\" class=\"wp-image-15703 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/181;\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> One of Broodthaers\u2019 main artistic <strong>influences<\/strong> was his friend and the famous <strong>Surrealist<\/strong> painter, <strong>Ren\u00e9 Magritte<\/strong>, who gave him a copy of St\u00e9phane Mallarm\u00e9\u2019s poem&nbsp;<em>Un Coup de D\u00e9s,&nbsp;<\/em>written in 1897.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong>&nbsp;Broodthaers&#8217;&nbsp;<strong>first<\/strong> <strong>solo<\/strong> exhibition took place at the Galerie St Laurent, Brussels in 1964 where he exhibited everyday objects, words, lettering and drawings, often using verbal and visual puns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.modernartoxford.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Broodthaers4.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.modernartoxford.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Broodthaers4-300x214.jpeg\" alt=\"Broodthaers4\" class=\"wp-image-15702 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/214;\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong>&nbsp;<em>Le Privil\u00e9ge De L&#8217;Art&nbsp;<\/em>was his <strong>final<\/strong> show in the UK until the&nbsp;<strong>Tate<\/strong>&nbsp;presented his work posthumously in 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> Broodthaers passed away on his 52nd birthday, only six months after his exhibition at Modern Art Oxford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> Broodthaers is buried at <strong>Ixelles Cemetery<\/strong> in Brussels, marked by&nbsp;a tombstone of his own desi<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In our latest exhibition, KALEIDOSCOPE\u00a0The Vanished Reality,\u00a0Marcel Broodthaers and his iconic works\u00a0return\u00a0to Modern Art Oxford after 41 years.
