Explore the stories of other pioneering women on our blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&#8211;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We&#8217;wha (1849-1896)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We\u2019wha had a particular position in Zuni society as an lhamana or \u2018two-spirit\u2019 &#8211; the third gender or \u2018man\/woman\u2019. Photo by Ben Westoby<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The anthropologist Matilda Coxe Stevenson met We\u2019wha while conducting fieldwork in the Zuni Pueblo in the late 19th century. In the late twentieth century, however, masculine pronouns were used.
