Find out about the other pioneering women over the coming weeks as we share their stories as part of this series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8211;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Makereti (1873-1930)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Makereti was born Margaret Pattison Thom, to a highborn Maori mother, Pia Ngarotu Te Rihi, and a retired English army officer, William Arthur Thom. She became a famous tour guide in New Zealand, known for escorting visitors through the geyser valley of Whakarewarewa near Rotorua.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-42177 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.modernartoxford.org.uk\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/makereti.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42177 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 3500px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 3500\/2500;\" \/><figcaption>\u00a9 Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford (1998.277.71 &amp; 1998.277.61)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>While working as a tour guide she became known as Maggie Papakura, naming herself after the \u2018Papakura\u2019 geyser when asked about her original Maori name. Here she comments once again on the role of displays to frame certain narratives, adding to the layers of representation Makereti herself played with throughout her life.
