Author Ziddy Ibn Sharam writes about <em>VIRGINS<\/em>: &#8220;These are poems to take with you and read aloud in transit, in public spaces, or quietly to your ride and die comrades. These are poems for the real ones.&#8221;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>TO HELL WITH ALL THAT<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>John Wayne and I gone strange &amp; stupid in the rerun,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>cadavers cantering on the endless spool &amp; script like simple math.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>In a post-patriarchal mainstream, a hippy cis divorcee<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>twice married into their officer class before the great defunding,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>is celebrated for her bestselling title<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong><em>Delicious Sorrow: Mourning Male Supremacy<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You get wasted and rave about the Property and Lifestyle feature<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>in which identical white girls in scented pantyliners<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>show your avatar around a series of magical show homes,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>all boasting big blue windows and wide doorways,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>lubricated with light like a hole in the head.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Bore me like one of your straight girls<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Big Hollywood like a bloated gut metabolising America,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>our grand-uncle Freud would call it:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>the wish fulfilment of a colonial guilt trip<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If only if only<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>those zombies sought revenge,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>it would be wounded knee all over again,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>and every cowboy would find his place<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>where he existed a mere moment between<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>the Enclosures Act and the end of mining<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>and as for the eternal ingenue, I wanted to be inside her,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>but tired of her euphemisms because death is the basic integer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>No desires without the grave<\/em>, I said, but she was pressing flowers into books.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The flowers were bright, wet, full of tongues and stamina.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong><em>They&#8217;ll stain<\/em>, I said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>It&#8217;ll fade<\/em>, she said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong><em>Like everything<\/em>, I said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>But the ingenue was illuminated<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>by her own pale fire.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The bluebeard Hitchcock said blondes make the best victims,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>and that&#8217;s what they mean by having more fun.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The white girls wear their throats open in spring, coquettish.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><em><strong>Some things are aeternal,<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>she said, and curtsied,<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\"><strong>springs creaking all the way down.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>About <em>VIRGINS<\/em>, Darling&#8217;s debut collection of poems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Experiential and mapped,&nbsp;<em>VIRGINS<\/em>&nbsp;takes us on car rides, through hotel rooms and up close to meat viscera and enamel structures.
