Join researchers and artists as they discuss the political, personal and environmental worlds we breathe in.

For this fascinating discussion in collaboration with the Humanities Cultural Programme at TORCH, we welcome Alice Sharp, Artistic Director, Invisible Dust; Patsy Isles, yoga teacher, writer and creative wellbeing practitioner; Derek McCormack, Professor of Cultural Geography, The University of Oxford; and Lucy Sabin, Modern Art Oxford Creative Associate (Digital) and Breathworks Project Lead.

This event accompanies Breathworks, Modern Art Oxford’s digital participatory project led by Lucy Sabin. Breathworks invites audiences to engage in creative storytelling about breathing.

The Breathworks public programme is part of the Humanities Cultural Programme at TORCH (The Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities).

Online, free, booking essential via the TORCH website. Book now.

Alice Sharp

Alice Sharp is Founder and Artistic Director of Invisible Dust. Set up in 2009, Invisible Dust is a UK based commissioning organisation that works with leading artists and scientists to produce new artworks that spark conversations about environmental concerns. Sharp has worked with artists including Elizabeth Price, Jeremy Deller, Faisal Abdu’Allah, Martin Parr and Tacita Dean. She has curated numerous projects including ‘Offshore: artists explore the sea’ as part of Hull UK City of Culture in 2017 and ‘Under Her Eye,’ a biannual international arts-science summit and arts festival bringing together a wide range of pioneering women working globally to tackle the environmental challenge of our age through art, science, technology, finance, health, activism, leadership and policy – united by the power of the arts to tell these stories, spark conversations and inspire change.

Professor Derek McCormack

Derek McCormack is Professor of Cultural Geography at the University of Oxford, a Fellow of Mansfield College, Oxford and a member of the Technological Life: Environments, Bodies, Mobilities research cluster. Derek's research explores the meteorological and affective senses of atmosphere across art, science, geopolitics and popular culture.

Patsy Isles

Patsy is an ex-journalist, blogger and a kundalini and hatha yoga teacher with a particular interest in the transformational power of the breath. She is a Creative Wellbeing Associate with Words of Colour, a social enterprise that supports, empowers and develops writers of colour and is co-founder of the Black Yoga and Wellbeing Collective, a group of wellbeing professionals working together to increase the visibility of people of colour in the wellbeing industry.

Lucy Sabin

Researcher, artist and designer Lucy Sabin is interested in the relationship between humans and ‘the atmosphere.’ Through her mixed-media practice, Sabin explores air as an ecological and social necessity for surviving and perceiving. Sabin is Project Lead for Breathworks, Modern Art Oxford’s 2020 digital participatory project.
