Creative Conversation: Women in the Arts
“Shows are just the beginning of a thing.
It’s what people who come and see it do,
And artists and what they do.”
What ideas for change does Lubaina’s exhibition Invisible Strategies encourage you to do?
In February 2017, artist Lubaina Himid was in conversation with Courtney J Martin at Modern Art Oxford. From the audience, someone pointed out that Lubaina’s work demonstrates a strong generosity to other women. Many people in the room agreed. Although Lubaina seemed unsure. So Courtney proved the point by simply stating some ways Lubaina had been generous to her, which made Lubaina laugh.
This Creative Conversation event is in that warm spirit of productive conversation. It aims to generate insights together that we may not come up with alone. The event is centred on conversational participation by the audience.
To open up the creative conversations, the event begins with a swift invigorating introduction to some aspects of feminism in visual art by Emma Ridgway, Head of Programme at Modern Art Oxford. This event is in celebration of International Women’s Day.
