HOW TO COLLECT – AN INSIDER’S GUIDE TO BUYING CONTEMPORARY ART
Why do people buy art? What does it mean to be a collector? How do you develop a collection of art?
Over the course of five sessions, Paul Hobson, Director of Modern Art Oxford, will navigate through the art world and art market, focusing on how culture and financial values are placed on art.
Examining the various roles of artists, curators and dealers, commercial galleries and art fairs, auction houses and private agents, this course is an essential guide to buying strategically with knowledge, confidence and passion.
Session one | Modern Art Oxford | Tuesday 21st April (7pm – 8.30pm)
The first session will introduce the subject of why we collect art and what it involves, leading to questions of how to develop your networks, your knowledge and your eye. Paul will then discuss how to build an art collection, how to research artists and galleries and how the art world and art market work.
Session two | Modern Art Oxford | Tuesday 28th April (7pm – 8.30pm)
Topics in the second session will involve specifics surrounding how to buy paintings and drawings. This will include looking at established and emerging artists of interest, trends in contemporary painting and drawing, through to practical considerations like framing, conservation, insurance and documentation.
Session three | Modern Art Oxford | Tuesday 12th May (7pm – 8.30pm)
The third session will examine buying sculpture. This will include key developments in sculptural practices, important and emerging artists of interest, through to installation, restoration, conservation and modes of display.
Session four | London | Saturday 23rd May (2pm – 5pm)
Focusing on how to navigate the growing number of international art fairs spanning the globe, the fourth session gives an opportunity for participants to explore Art15 in Olympia, London.
Session five | Modern Art Oxford | Tuesday 9th June (7pm – 8.30pm)
In the final session, the course will discuss the secondary art market. Questions will involve the work of auction houses and secondary dealers, how they differ from commercial art galleries and art fairs and advice on how to buy at auction.
This course is suitable for those who have no previous experience or knowledge of the art market or buying/collecting, as well as for individuals who are looking to further develop their collection. Comprehensive notes on ‘How To Collect’ will be provided to participants.
