The new film works that form Penny Woolcock: Fantastic Cities feature voiceovers, lyrics and performances from hip hop artists from London and Oxford. To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, featured artists including Zimbo Freemind, Side and Malik Sankara will perform live at Modern Art Oxford.

Zimbo Freemind is a Birmingham based rap artist with a large underground following. He is well known for his hard-hitting lyrics about his life growing up on the streets and the harsh realities of gun crime and gang culture. Zimbo along with B6 SLASH, his former rap group, were pioneers of UK Gangster Rap.

In 2012 Zimbo appeared in an award-winning channel 4 documentary One Mile Away directed by Penny Woolcock which followed the journey of two men from opposing sides of a 20 year gang rivalry trying to bring about a truce. This opened many doors for Zimbo and he has since become a prominent public speaker and community leader.

Listen to his track ‘Mind of a Slave’ (video directed by Penny Woolcock).

Side is an Oxford based UK hip-hop artist and activist fighting the system and its oppression through conscious music. He features in Penny Woolcock’s new short film Dreaming Spires commissioned by Modern Art Oxford and on display in the Piper Gallery as part of Fantastic Cities.

Listen to his track with Black Jack Tha Activist ‘Boxing Day Cypher [Prod. Re-C Sounds]’
