MAO Young Artists: Change, What is that Anyway?

Change, What is that Anyway? is an exhibition of works by young artists (aged 16-19) who have been involved in this year’s creative projects at the gallery.

Discover artworks by the Modern Art Oxford Young Creatives, and the young artists who took part in our art residency in October. From paintings, illustrations and prints, to sculpture and films, see work by the next generation of young artists in Oxford. Our Young Creatives have also produced a limited edition zine alongside the exhibition.
Below, the groups introduce their projects in their own words.

Modern Art Oxford’s Young Creatives

Change, What is that Anyway? Better? Worse? What is that anyway?

Everything changed when I opened the golden box and found nothing.

We are a group of 10 artists aged 16-19 based in Oxfordshire, meeting together monthly to develop our own artistic voice.

This collaboration is an expression of our process, considering moments of transformation, warping and change in life.

We have produced a series of artworks that will be on display in the Creative Space and available to buy as a limited edition zine.

In our hands…we can do what we like with it.

The Modern Art Oxford Young Creatives are: Alex Panejko, Alina Hu, Armin Csizmadia, Arina Colun, Benjamin Henning, Isabel Elsner, Lina-Maria Marrow, Lonnie Saragih, Mia Annesen-Wood and Ly Veerakul.

October art residency – Collaborative Artist Statement

Our week-long residency took a fun, explorative approach

There was a clear discomfort in the beginning

We were paper pillows

Throughout the week we were able to become more open in our creative processes

We explored a more emotional side to art work and the way it links with our inner dialogue

We didn’t know what significant meaning our pieces needed to have at first, but we didn’t need to

We transformed our memories to our materials

We were moving and we were moved

We were understanding through doing

The young artists who took part in the residency in October 2022 are Leri, Emily and Delilah.

Join us at the gallery on Friday 9 December from 6-9.30pm, to celebrate the opening of the exhibition. Free, no booking necessary. Click to find out more.

The Young Creatives’ zine is generously supported by The Newspaper Club.

Each year, we invite 8 Young Creatives to bring new perspectives to Modern Art Oxford’s programme. Over the course of 12 months, the group gains experience of working directly with artists and arts professionals by working collaboratively to develop new strategies for engaging young people in Oxfordshire, taking inspiration from the gallery’s exhibitions and projects to create a more inclusive space for everyone.

In October 2022, young artists aged 16-19 joined professional artists Oreet Ashery, Miriam Austin and Sian Gourlay, for a free five day art residency at the gallery. Alongside our exhibition with Marina Abramović, Gates and Portals, the group explored movement, gesture and performance.
