Following the new guidance issued by the government, Modern Art Oxford will be closed from Wednesday 23 December, until further notice. We look forward to welcoming you back to the gallery as soon as we can.
Gustav Metzger is the creator of auto-destructive art and as such, the majority of his work is not merely hard to locate, it literally no longer exists. In order to realise this exhibition, three things were done: the hunting down of documents and photographs of performances, demonstrations and non-existent work; the recreation of historical work or new work in the in the spirit of the older work; and the creation of new works.
This catalogue, which was published on the occasion of the touring exhibition Gustav Matzger between 1998 and 1999, contains three essays by Director Kerry Brougher, Curator Astrid Bowron and Art Historian Norman Rosenthal and contains photos and documentation of Metzger’s work.
