This catalogue was produced on the occassion of the exhibition India: Myth and Reality, aspects of Modern Indian Art, held in 1982.

The exhibition did not profess to be a comprehensive representation of all tendencies and styles in contemporary Indian art, but was an attempt to project a coherent view of some of its most significant aspects since its Independence in 1947. Roughly, it presents three generations of Indian artists over a 25-year period.

The publication contains an intorduction by Director David Elliott, biographies and illustrations of each artists and a further seven essays.
