Johanna Unzueta’s edition for Modern Art Oxford, available in either blue or green, has been produced to accompany her current exhibition Tools for Life combining Unzueta’s signature abstract geometric drawings with her ongoing experimentation with natural dye processes.
Unzueta hand-tints the paper for all of her drawings with natural dyes made from beetroot, onion, indigo, fustic and other organic pigments connected to indigenous craft practices of Latin America. For her Modern Art Oxford edition Unzueta turned to the traditional crafts of the British Isles and created Nocturnal using two native plants, woad (isatis tinctoria) and madder (rubia tinctorum), to make the dyes, which were then applied to the paper in layers. The dyed paper has then been screenprinted with an original drawing emulative of the site-specific wall mural Unzueta has produced for Modern Art Oxford’s Middle Gallery, also titled Nocturnal. The resulting series of works are each unique in colour and texture.
