Monica Bonvicini’s edition for Modern Art Oxford was produced to accompany her 2003 exhibition Anxiety Attack, the artist’s first solo show in the UK which presented new and recent work. Working with video, film, assembled structures, drawings and text Bonvicini interrogated the relationship between our bodies, their architectural surroundings and gender.
This edition is of a still taken from Shotgun (2003), a 10 minute looped multi-channel DVD projection made from footage shot from a moving car is Los Angeles, one side consisting of a slow moving pan of store fronts, streets, car parks, backs of suburbs, roadsides; all delineated by brick walls, metal grills and wire fences. The other side showing three smaller moving frames running across a still image of a windowless side of a breeze block building in the foreground, weeds growing out of a cracked pavement. The title of the piece is drawn from the soundtrack, a mixture of edgy, drawn out cello and a recording from a phone-in radio programme on home improvements, the shotgun being revealed as a type of fungus.
