Modern Art Oxford’s Associate Artist programme supports the development of creative practice and organisational development by working with local artists to create a safe public space for engaging with art. The gallery is part of the dynamic cultural ecology of Oxford and our work and frequent collaborations with partners are focused ensuring the cultural offer in Oxford is future focused and sustainable.

Making Space Safe: Mary Chamberlain

Making Space Safe workshops are led by associate artist Mary Chamberlain with Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Oxford. These sessions teach artistic skills and create a sense of social cohesion for the group that includes people from Kurdistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia and China, referred by local organisations Asylum Welcome and Refugee ResourceMaking Space Safe has met weekly in a private space at Modern Art Oxford.

Mary Chamberlain is a qualified and experienced art therapist and creative practitioner specialising in working with drawing and painting with vulnerable groups and individuals.

Mandala Theatre: Yasmin Sidhwa

Yasmin Sidhwa runs Mandala Theatre, a diversity-led company that creates exciting new theatre with social justice at its heart. Her work aims to give a voice to stories that are not heard. Modern Art Oxford works with Mandala to create on-site theatre workshops and performances.

The Room Next to Mine: Marlene Smith

The Room Next to Mine is a project which looks into researching the history of exhibitions of women of the UK Black Arts Movement. Founder Marlene Smith is working with Modern Art Oxford to explore fresh ways to engage with diverse local visitors through research, events and workshops.
