The Project Space is our smaller gallery on the ground floor. It is vital to Modern Art Oxford’s learning events as it provides a dedicated space to host exhibitions, events, practical workshops and discussions.

Resource Room

The Project Space is the place to gain a deeper creative understanding of our major solo exhibitions. During Lubaina Himid’s Invisible Strategies (Jan – April 2017), the first major survey exhibition by one of the pioneers of the British Black Arts Movement, the room offered an opportunity for learning through reading, watching and viewing archive material. And during Hannah Ryggen: Woven Histories (Nov 2017 – Feb 2018) the room was a site to read and weave as we created a communal loom, ran workshops and installed a fabric reading den for children.

Exhibitions

The Project Space often hosts short exhibitions with artists from Oxford and beyond. Since 2012 the gallery has used the space for the annual Platform Graduate Award, an initiative to support emerging graduate artistic talent to further their practice following graduation. A significant exhibition by Oxford-based international photographer Kazem Hakimi took place in 2017 in the Project Space. It has also been used to showcase other artists such as the biannual exhibition of the Shadowlight Artists, 5 artists with learning disabilities with partners Film Oxford.
