Influenced by his own history of growing up under Tito’s dictatorship in the former Yugoslavia, David Maljkovic is a Croatian artist (b. 1973) whose practice explores the legacy of the international avant-garde and the possibilities of rebuilding a future. Drawing on archives and using the formal and conceptual strategy of collage, Maljkovic works in film, sculpture and installation to exploring the relationship between the past and present through abstract structures and digital effects.

In his work, Maljkovic continually draws on materials from his own archive to create collages which evoke the layered nature of contemporary media. The image in this edition is drawn from Maljkovic’s New Reproductions, a sculpture containing a series of vertically aligned trays which revealed a layered collage of images when opened and which featured Modern Art Oxford’s second exhibition A Moment of Grace in KALEIDOSCOPE, Modern Art Oxford’s 50th anniversary year programme in 2016. The edition has been printed on loose canvas to create an entirely new work, demonstrating the multiple possibilities that can be generated from the same body of material.
