Re-visit a public conversation between artist Lubaina Himid and art historian Courtney J. Martin at Modern Art Oxford in 2017. Their discussion focuses on Himid’s curatorial practice and her experiences in early life.
Courtney J. Martin is an assistant professor in the History of Art and Architecture department at Brown University. As an art historian of the modern and contemporary fields, her scholarship is invested in the ways in which the post-1968 period altered art and artists internationally. Her writing and teaching is concentrated in three areas: twentieth century British art, sculpture studies and the history of art criticism.
The talk is part of Invisible Strategies, the first major survey exhibition by British artist Lubaina Himid. One of the pioneers of the British Black Arts Movement, Himid first came to prominence in the 1980s when she began organising exhibitions of work by her peers, whom she felt were under-represented in the contemporary art scene. Invisible Strategies brings together a wide range of Himid’s paintings from the 1980s to the present day, as well as sculptures, ceramics and works on paper.
